Synchronizing TomboyNotes via Dropbox

Linux only: TomboyNotes is a desktop note taking app that also offers note synchronization via SSH.
Dropbox is a free (2GB) file hosting site that lets you sync your files across multiple computers.

We won’t use the synchronization feature of TomboyNotes, coz it’s not something that everyone has access to – we’ll use Dropbox instead.

This article assumes that you already have both TomboyNotes and Dropbox installed. Dropbox is an application too, that syncs files in a specific folder.

Before you start, in your Dropbox folder, create a new folder called TomboyNotes (or whatever you want to call it).

Open your TomboyNotes preferences by either right clicking on it’s icon (if you’ve added it as a tool in your panel) and clicking Preferences, or by going to Applications > Accessories > Tomboy Notes > Edit > Preferences.

Under Synchronization tab, select Local Folder as the Service , and browse to the folder you created earlier inside your Dropbox folder.

click the Save button to set up

Upon successful synchronization, you’ll be presented with the number and details of the notes that were synchronized.

You’re all set. It’s not auto-sync, so you have to manual re-sync them by clicking the Tools button in an open note and clicking Synchronize notes.

Also..in time, the contents of the TomboyNotes folder inside the Dropbox folder will fill up with folders numbered from 0 to something, depending on how often you’ve synchronized the notes. If you’re a little OC, you can unsync them by going back to the Preferences > Synchronization tab and clicking the Clear button. Once done, delete the contents of the TomboyNotes folder (don’t worry, you won’t loose your notes), then resync them again.
