Applying Patches to W810i

Posted by: liquidskinn on: June 27, 2008

Warning: What may happen to your phone while following these steps is NOT my responsibility. You’re the one doing them, not me. So if in case you did something wrong and ruined it, point your blaming finger on no else but yourself. You have been warned.

—————————————-

Right.. for this tutorial, you’ll be needing:

- fully charged W810i

- PC ofcourse

- USB data cable

- SETool Lite (freeware and easily downloadable)

- patches that you’d want to put in your phone

Steps (please see the screenshots. use as basis and mind the numbers)

- Turn off your phone

- Choose your phone model from the drop down (1)

- choose the interface and speed (2) i suggest that you leave it as it is though

- click the browse button for Misc files and browse to the location of the .vkp patch you want to install (3)

- press Write Script. NOTE: Be careful in pressing the buttons. As you can see, the Write Script is directly below the Write GDFS, which is why they call SETool a landmine. If you made a mistake and clicked the Write GDFS, your phone is DEAD.

- it will now prompt you to Hold the C button and plug the cable.

- upon successful connection, it will prompt you again to Detach the cable, remove the battery, put it back again and to press the Ready button after. You will be instructed again to hold the C button and plug the cable back.

- after a few seconds, a message box will pop up that says something like ‘click Yes to remove and No to apply’.. press NO.

- after another few seconds, another message box will appear, saying that some values differ. click Yes.

- wait till SETool displays the elapsed time.. that means that patching is done and you can now unplug your phone and restart it.

That’s it! :) This same procedure applies for all patches and for all models.

Additional

———-

Right, after this procedure, only three things can happen. Those are:

(1) your phone will start back, patch is successfully installed and is working. In this case, we should congratulate ourselves because we followed every step cautiously and made sure everything fits before actually proceeding.

(2) your phone will start, but the patch didn’t do anything at all. nothing special. This might be because, you either pressed ‘Yes’ instead of ‘No’ when SETool prompted for action, hence the patch was not applied. In that case, you should repeat the steps, this time, click No.

OR the patch is not compatible with your phone’s firmware. it’s good that it did not ruin the phone in any way at all. It just didn’t work. You should be thankful.

(3) Your phone will not restart - it just blinks a white screen. This happened to me more than a couple of times too, so don’t fret. Anyway, this one might be due to the fact that the patch you applied is not meant for your current firmware.  Most patches out there are for R4EA031 Generic MAIN, although some patches have been ported (rewritten) for other firmwares too. So, if it didn’t work, it just simply means that your firmware is not supported.

You can either:

(a) try what I did, which is update the firmware through Sony Ericsson’s Update Service. Be careful though, especially for DB2020 phones, because Sony Ericsson, in it’s attempt to stop modders from hacking the phone, will update not only your firmware but the encryption (CID49 to CID52 to CID53). If that happens, you get back your phone, but you won’t be able to mod it again, ever. SEUS is safe for DB2010s like W810i and others.

(b) reflash your firmware. This is last attempt, especially if the above mentioned is not a good resort. As for flashing, you can refer to this post I wrote about the topic.

I used the wrong SYSGFX patch… Now my phone won’t start anymore. Is there any solution to fix it??

Joke (Belgium)

Hi Joke. :) Nice name.. thanks for commenting.

Did you try removing the patch? You can do that by following the same procedure, only you should click ‘Yes’ when it prompts (clicking No will apply the patch).

Anyway.. that happened to me too, when I applied a patch that’s not compatible with my phone’s firmware. I was able to solve the problem by using SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service). The phone went back to life alright.. but it had a different firmware. I dunno how that’s going to affect the rest of the patches (if you have more).

More drastic measure would be to.. reflash your firmware.

[...] Steps: Again, assuming that you’ve read all the posts on how to connect using SETool and that you know how to patch. If not.. geez.. where’ve you been?? Kidding! See here. [...]

Hi, your tutorial is so useful, but is there any way to start up my phone again because i made a mistake and now it doesn’t work!! please help me!!!

Hi Pantelis

You could try and update the firmware using SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service).

OR

You can try and flash your firmware but.. that’s also a bit on the drastic side.

ok….i tried updating it but the application encountered an error…How can i flash my firmware??

what sort of error?

I made a separate post about that too
http://thegiornale.wordpress.com/2008/06/27/flashing-firmware-w810i/

can i ask you a few questions?

i done this correctly and its a success. but my problem is when im going to patch my phone using a VKP file, the phone wont turn on even if the patch files is applicable to my main which is generic…

BTW, i writing script using SETool Lite
whats the prob. on this?

my SW R4EA031

Hi Joke,
How are you ?
Currently I am using Sony ericsson W810i phone. I have few questions to ask you.
1. Can you please tell me whether I copy and paste skin images with .jpg or .jar format into Gfx folder ?
2. Can you please tell me the procedure to use the patch after the successful installation of patch, after restarting the phone ?

Thanks,
Susheela Devi

So, after a few problems i changed my w810 walkman 1.0 skin to walkman2.0 skin!
how?
i have xs++, far manager, setool_lite2, sysgfx_alpha_w810_r4ea031, ebfb8c6c0ac16bfe.rar(here ar the .jpg’s for the skin)

my w810 phone has r4ea031_generic_hn

xs++ helps you to write a breakloader; far manager helps you to put the files on the specify folder, mine was: /usb/other/gfx/…. .jpg files (if you have a rar file unrar and then copy all the .jpg files into that folder); then write with setoll_lite2 sysgfx_alpha_w810_r4ea031( explained here: Applying Patches to W810i)

then power the phone!!!!!!!enjoy!!!!!!!

tried so many times but its not working….it wont connect no matter how long i hold the “C” botton :/
please help me

have you tried using another USB port? sometimes all it takes is to use a different one.
